The Design Adventures of Alane
Here’s my quickie elevator pitch. I’m a mom to four, mostly grown now, delightful kids, a couple of dogs and a cat. I was a Registered Nurse for twenty-something years, but I always did interior design projects on the side for my friends and family. People frequently asked why I didn’t go to school for that instead of nursing. I didn’t know it was option, frankly.
Anyway, fast forward to my post-divorce midlife crisis when I decided I should do just that. So I went back to school and got a degree in Interior Design. I was a single mom working full time, consequently it only took me about 100 years to get through. However, I did it and now I’m doing THE THING I’m completely passionate about, and additionally working for myself too. Soooo totally worth missing all that sleep! Furthermore I even made a very, VERY obscure TV show about design. One hit wonder, but who’s counting?
My resignation letter from nursing was kinda EPIC, so I’ll have to share that letter in the future.
I BELIEVE in the power of design to improve quality of life and human outcomes. Therefore, I don’t think good design should be limited only to people with large budgets. Design is for everyone. Design has the power to impact people from all walks of life in a positive way. I want to spread this goodness and continue to follow my life’s mission and carry it forward into my business mission: SERVICE THROUGH DESIGN. I hope you’ll see that reflected in all my work and each project I endeavor, large or small. It's my little way of adding joy into the world.
How can I bring some happiness into your home today?
Background
My background in nursing and my design internship at http://www.dwellwithdignity.org, have stoked my interest in the science of how environments impact people’s lives. I’ll definitely touch on that here, as well of lots of nerdy science things and “evidence based practice” like color theory and noise pollution. But I’ll also wander down rabbit holes of design things I just love too. (It’s been suggested I have a touch of the ADD. Ha ha)
I am OBSESSED with great lighting, and fun chairs and unexpected items. And if something makes me laugh, all the better! I always LOVE LOVE LOVE original art and color! And I admit it now, my Achilles heel: junk. I can never resist a good junk store wherever I roam in the world. Stay tuned to hear more about that.

Philosophy – Living this Life!
Because my children and I suffered a tragedy early in our lives, I am a big believer in the concept that everyday is a special day and a day worth celebrating. In that spirit we often get dressed up and eat on the “fancy” plates on a random Tuesday because we’re “living this life!” TODAY, not holding back and waiting for some better, more important day to come along. Now is the time to live our very best lives. TODAY is the day! And thus the name of my blog and the guiding principle for my designs.
Mission – Service through Design
Finally, as I suggested earlier, I BELIEVE in the power of design to improve quality of life. Therefore, I don’t think good design should be limited only to people with large budgets. Design is for everyone. Design impacts everyone in all walks of life in a positive way. And I want to spread the goodness and continue to follow my life’s mission of service. So my business mission is SERVICE THROUGH DESIGN. I hope you’ll see that reflected here.
