Dreams Cribs

My sweet son recently got engaged and we're so excited! And I can't lie, I am counting the days until he and his lovely bride decide they want to give me some GRANDKIDS! No pressure. LOL. Being a mother of four myself, I obviously love kids and I am really looking forward to designing a grandchild's nursery. So I've been looking at cribs and dreaming about my faves.

Vetro
Gradient
Chabanais
Thonet
Rockwell
Sweet Dreams

Each of these appeals to me in very different ways, but I love them all! Each one would make a lovely focal point in a very different type of nursery. So I cannot wait to see which style my son and his wife prefer (one of these days, of course, when they decide to have kids). In the meantime, this gal can dream.

Which crib do you prefer?

Interior Design for Health and Wellness

This blue and green color palette is calming and fresh to soothe the soul

Coming from a nursing background,  I've always been interested in the correlation between interior design and health and wellness. In the healthcare setting, the design focus is on indirect lighting fixtures, open and diffused natural light from numerous large windows, a quiet environment, and avoiding irritating stimuli. As this article explains, colors are planned to have the maximum impact for health and healing. Rich, earthen tones and raw materials create warmth; textural elements include a variety of living plants and exposure to nature. "The elements of design are chosen to mentally reinforce vitality and soothe anxiety."

When I changed careers to go into Interior Design, helping people live their best lives was still an important part of my life's mission.

"Dwell with Dignity designs and installs complete home interiors for families who desperately need an environment that will support health and wellness. We empower families to lead their best lives and to thrive in a safe, functional, and beautiful environment."

It was only natural to join Dwell with Dignity early in my design career. This organization focuses on design choices that support family health, healing and wellness, especially for kids. Here's some interesting research on design in home environments:

Gray is calming for some, but depressing for others. Use gray in textiles rather than paint or paint in rooms with lots of natural light to add warmth.

I had the pleasure of designing this home for a Dwell with Dignity family during my time with that organization.

Plants Make it Better

Research from TAMU shows that, "Keeping plants in a child’s learning environment enhances learning capabilities by helping them to focus and concentrate. This improves their ability to learn new things and makes it easier for them to absorb and retain information. Ornamental plants are conducive to generating a positive learning environment, reducing children’s tendency towards distraction and helping them to be better able concentrate on school work."

Following a Dwell with Dignity policy, I still encourage clients to add live plants throughout their home.

Natural Light Makes it Right

"A light-drenched room is a joy to behold, but did you know sunlight also reduces depression? Whether you get sunlight outdoors or through a window, sunlight is a mood lifter. In fact, more sunlight into rooms can boost happiness. A persistent lack of sun can trigger sadness or enhance anxiety. Sunlight also seems to energize and motivate humans at home and work." according to this article on from OSU.

I love leaving windows uncovered when possible or using light, airy curtains when privacy is necessary.

Organized Pantry

Organization Helps Everything

We've all heard Marie Kondo's advice on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. Turns out, Marie is onto something. Clean, open homes with minimal clutter facilitate better moods. "Decluttering is the first step to creating spacious rooms and homes. Room layouts, furniture placement, storage solutions, and color schemes are significant contributors to a space that feels open and airy. One study identified...room organization [as] a major component of a peaceful, soothing home. Spaces that were easy to navigate and fostered social interaction reduced anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed."

Organization solutions are one of the most common problems I help clients solve. Here's one I'm working on right now, in fact. My client needs a folding table and more storage in her laundry room and has this existing nook that will work perfectly for that. And it will really help their family be more organized and less stressed!

Color is Key

Color is a powerful interior design tool that arguably has more impact on the mood of a room than any other factor. We know from studying color psychology, in both healhcare settings and in our homes, "Unconscious or otherwise, color can evoke emotions, inspire reactions, and change modes of thinking. It can excite or soothe your mood, raise or lower your blood pressure, and even whet your appetite! Whether it’s innate or learned, it’s undeniable that color has a vital impact on how we go about our lives."

The two powder baths pictured above are terrific examples of how very differently we instantly perceive similar rooms based simply on color.

Pink

Pink helps restore bone tissues, relieve stress and fatigue and helps with insomnia. It is refreshing and associated with calm, joy, nurturing, healing and tranquility.

Black

Black creates an atmosphere of luxury . An excess of this color can be depressing, but when used in balance, it adds calmness, sophistication, elegance and cozy ambiance.

I was inspired to write this blog when I saw a similar LinkedIn article by my former employer, Dwell with Dignity, and was reminded of how vitally important Interior Design is, especially for those recovering from trauma and building new, healthy lives.

Houndstooth Season

Houndstooth Season

I've got a little thing for houndstooth. And since the weather got chilly here overnight, an odd event this early in Fall in Texas, I got all excited and started getting out all my houndstooth clothing in preparation for #houndstoothseason! Of course no one wore the vintage (my fave!) Magnolia Houndstooth and Feather coat as well as Blair Eadie at Atlantic-Pacific in this blog's feature image, but a gal can dream, right? Check out Blair's other looks on her site. She is so fabulous!

Anyhow, back to #houndstooth. This is one of my go-to patterns. It's black and white, which I love. It's classic so it never goes out of style. It comes in a variety of scales, big or little or in between, so it mixes with other patterns perfectly.

We rescued this homeowner's grandmother's fantastic, well-made, vintage sofa from the bowels of an old storage. Reupholstered it in a FAB houndstooth. LOVING IT!

Art Obsession

Art Obsession

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.

I am obsessed with art and could lose myself for days and days inside an art museum. When my son was young, this is how we would entertain ourselves. I remember once when we were looking at statues, which lose their appendages over time, and he asked if they didn't have genitalia 'back then' since this paticular anatomy had been lost to time on so many of the ancient specimens. I laughed until I cried at his innocent observation of the ravages of centuries.

Gravity is rough, my son, rough.

This poor Greek guy lost all his parts

Art sets the mood for a room. It is the essential finishing detail in every design I complete. I always love when we reach this personal part of each install and I get to go art shopping with clients!

My personal taste in art runs the gamut from whimsical to dark. Art that is provocative and makes me feel something, stokes my curiosity or just makes my eyes happy with color is what I really love.

And that's how I encourage clients to choose art: to select original art that speaks to them personally, invokes an emotional reaction, and brings them joy.

Full Circle

Early in this post I mentioned that my son and I spent a lot of his young life obsessively exploring art museums. He went on to get an art degree from a college in New York, home to arguably some of the best art museums in the world. He has since found his life's passion and a career working as an animation artist. He currently works on the show Solar Opposites on Hulu. Obviously I'm super proud!

I'm not saying all that time in museums influenced his choice of careers, but who is to say it didn't?

Design Personality Quiz

August 20, 2021

I was searching for new, fresh fabrics and wallcoverings today and came across something super fun. Harlequin has introduced their latest collection: HARLEQUIN COLOUR 1

I'm really excited about their #owntheroom approach because they have partnered with Professor Stephen Westland and Research Fellow Soojin Lee in their white paper, 'Harlequin', to discuss a topic near and dear to my heart. In Harlequin, Professor Westland and Soojin Lee find that “there is convincing evidence that colour and light can affect our health and wellbeing and nowhere is this more important than in our homes”. As a former nurse turned Interior Designer, I couldn't agree more, Professor!
